Monotypes Series 1: Wraith

Wraith – has evolved from making monotypes of leaves from one particular Paulownia tree in its seasons of decay and renewal. This follows a scientific image-making tradition of nature printing from the 19th century – free from the artist’s hand, and seeing the world in a grain of sand.

The work has resulted in unique monotypes that explore a response to wraith; a Scottish dialectal word for ghost, spirit, ghostlike image of someone before or after death, spectre, spirit, phantom, apparition, manifestation, vision, shadow, presence, poltergeist, supernatural – all are words that deal with where death occurs but a neoteric life force prevails.
